The world’s most rare and expensive coffee. ‘Asian Palm Civet Coffee Beans’ or the legendary Civet Cat Coffee, is one of the world’s rarest and most precious coffees that derives its complexity from a natural fermentation process.

The coffee cherries are eaten and digested by the Asian Palm Civet cat before being processed further. Luwak coffee beans yield an aromatic coffee with much less bitterness, widely noted as one the most luxurious and expensive coffees in the world. In general, wild civet cat coffee production requires a labor-intensive process. At Wallacea Coffee, our farmers manually collected the civet’s droppings and cleaned it with natural Gayo mountain fresh water. Afterward, the partially-digested coffee beans are sun-dried, de-pulped, and roasted. Lastly, the roasted Luwak coffee beans are packed into the coffee bags with a degassing valve to let the beans release the remaining gasses.

The uncommon way to produce civet cat coffee is one of the factors behind its expensive price. The coffee beans are naturally defecated through the Asian palm civet’s digestive system. Its uniqueness turns Luwak coffee into a sought-after coffee in the coffee market.

Another factor is the time-consuming and labor-intensive processes, especially for wild Luwak coffee. The coffee farmers need a fairly long time and manual processing to collect the Asian palm civets’ droppings. Unfortunately, wild civet cat coffee is not a mass-produced coffee, considering the production process. Based on this reason, the supply outstrips the demand, which further hikes the selling price of wild civet cat coffee.

Everybody talks about coffee these days and coffee Luwak is no exception. Not only the coffee snobs in the coffee shops but the characters in the movie as well. Guess what? One of the well-known movies called “The Bucket List” has substantially boosted the popularity of the civet cat coffee. The joke over Luwak coffee keeps spreading and hyping up the Luwak coffee throughout the global market. As it is widely spread throughout the world, luxury coffee shop owners started to carry Luwak coffee products in their business menu to satisfy their coffee lovers!

It is recommended to brew Luwak coffee with V60Chemex, or espresso machine brewing methods. The espresso machine method presents a full-bodied, amazingly flavorful, and less acidic civet cat coffee. On the other hand, Chemex and V60 methods are the perfect fits for a less-bitter, less-acidic, and light-tasting Kopi Luwak coffee. The choice is yours whether you prefer strong-tasting or light-tasting Kopi Luwak coffee.

At Wallacea Coffee, civet cat coffee is roasted using a commercial coffee roasting machine to the medium-dark roasting profile. The medium and medium-dark roasting profiles are capable of revealing a balanced flavor profile in the Luwak coffee beans. It turns the partially-digested coffee beans into roasted Luwak coffee beans that have a full body, bright acidity, and bitter-sweet aftertaste.

Wild Asian palm civets typically consume the common green coffee beans that grow in the nearest coffee plantation from their habitat. Take Wallacea Coffee as an example. The wild Asian palm civets typically consume Gayo Sumatra Arabica coffee, which is the specialty coffee from the Sumatra Island of Indonesia. Based on this reason, our wild Luwak coffee beans reveal a hint of earthy flavor note, a bright acidity, and a smooth aftertaste just like Gayo Sumatra Arabica coffee.

Well… the price of civet cat coffee beans comes down to the cultivation method. The wild civet cat coffee is far more expensive compared to caged civet cat coffee. Even reach up to $500 per kilogram of wild Luwak coffee beans!

If you are expecting a lower price for wild Luwak coffee beans, it is highly recommended to buy it through a direct-trade coffee supplier. A direct-trade coffee supplier like us provides a fairly affordable price for our Luwak coffee beans, where it is sold at $35.53 per pack. Each pack contains 250 grams of coffee beans or ground coffee. This fairly affordable price has nothing to do with the quality. To sell Luwak coffee beans at this price, a direct-trade coffee supplier is sourcing the wild Luwak coffee beans directly from the farmers’ plantations, not the middlemen. This way, a direct-trade coffee supplier is capable of providing a more competitive price to the market.

Kopi Luwak coffee, civet cat coffee, Luwak coffee, or coffee Luwak are the typical terms to describe the specialty coffee type that is produced from the civets’ droppings. The coffee beans are naturally decaffeinated inside the digestive tract of the Asian palm civets. Once the partially-digested coffee beans are pooped out by the Asian palm civets, Luwak coffee beans are cleaned, sun-dried, and de-pulped before being packed.

Based on Jacobs, H (2018) on Insider, civet cat coffee is offered at $35 to $100 per cup. Its costly price turns most coffee lovers to purchase ground coffee Luwak or Asian palm civet cat coffee beans and brew it themselves at home. For this reason, coffee lovers can enjoy cups of Luwak coffee on a regular basis today.

In short, civet cat coffee is exceptionally safe to consume. Most coffee lovers doubt its hygiene just because it is made from Asian palm civet droppings. But an important thing to note is that these Asian palm civets’ droppings have undergone a cleaning and roasting process that sterilizes the Luwak coffee beans. Based on this reason, the hygiene of the processed Luwak coffee beans is guaranteed.

The taste relies on the Asian palm civet’s diet. Most of the time, Asian palm civets consume coffee cherries along with a diverse range of fruits, so each batch produces different exotic flavors. Most of the time, the final taste is a blend of sweet caramel and earthy flavor notes, followed by a fruity flavor note.

For decades, Indonesian Asian palm civet cat coffee has been considered the best civet cat coffee across the globe. In Indonesia, Asian palm civets live around single-origin coffee plantations and consume the coffee cherries there. So it can be said that most Indonesian civet cat coffee comes from top-notch single-origin coffee varieties. For this reason, it presents unique flavors from a blend of single-origin coffee varieties and civet cat coffee’s flavor characteristics.

If you are a beginner coffee maker, you can consider the Aeropress or V60 brewing method when brewing Kopi Luwak coffee at home. The tools are relatively easy to use and it is also fairly affordable for a beginner coffee lover. These coffee brewing methods are also capable of presenting clean-tasting, less bitter, and flavorful civet cat coffee.

You can buy Luwak coffee beans directly from the source through the direct-trade coffee suppliers. Typically, they sell Asian palm civet cat coffee through their online shops. Make sure you buy Luwak coffee beans only from the country of origin or a verified well-known coffee supplier like us.

At Wallacea Coffee, our wild Luwak coffee is sourced directly from our farmers’ plantations in Indonesia. That is why it has been certified by the Gayo Coffee Protection Society Foundation to guarantee the quality of our Luwak coffee beans.

4 reviews for Wild Kopi Luwak Coffee, 250 grams (8.8 oz) (Whole Civet Coffee Beans)

  1. This coffee has such a unique aroma, also has an excellent flavor to it. Definitely worth the premium over other types of coffee. Will buy again.

  2. I have decaf coffee on a daily basis since I have very high coffee intolerance. However, by drinking decaf coffee it’s like having a coffee without the boost of energy. When it comes to Kopi Luwak, don’t have any side effects of the coffee but at the same time bringing me back that energy the same as black coffee! Overall, the problem solved!!!! Really enjoy every sip of this coffee!!!

  3. Good coffee! I will buy it again.

  4. What you ask for in non decaf coffee mixed with a kick of energy while still having a delicious taste! Love it and recommend it to anyone who enjoys non decaf coffee.
